  • September 6, the Canandaigua VAMC Rural Health RV and Social worker were present at the Veteran Outreach Center’s 5k/10k event, Pound The Ground. The Medical Unit was open for touring and information about how to access its services. The race had several hundred people in attendance and outreach material was provided for Rural health, Crisis, Women’s health, Enrollment and Caregiver support information.


  • August 27 and 28, Canandaigua VAMC, the VITAL Team was present for the Finger Lakes Community College new student orientation. During this event the VITAL Team set up a display table with information concerning suicide prevention, Tele-Mental Health Services, eligibility for VA Health Care enrollment, and services provided by the VITAL Team. There were 260 students and parents who attended this event. Contact was made with five newly enrolled veterans that may need the services of the VITAL team while attending this higher educational institution.


  • August 29, Canandaigua VAMC, Vincent Schillaci, Veterans Justice Outreach Specialist (VJO) for Rochester Outpatient Clinic and Canandaigua VAMC, attended a training given to 30 attorneys by the NYS Defenders Association’s Veterans Defense Program. Gary Horton, Esq, Director of the Program and Art Cody, Captain USN (Ret.), Esq. Legal Director, provided 2 hours of Continuing Law Education on “Best Practices for Representation of Veterans”. The Defense Program works closely with VJO and provides consultation, representation, research and education to attorneys related to justice-involved veterans. Mr. Schillaci has continued this partnership since its inception in April of 2014. VISN 2 VJO information is given to all participants across VISN 2 when education is provided by the Defense Program. Mr. Schillaci offered the attorneys an overview of VHA offers to justice-involved Veterans and our partners in the justice system. VJO functions as a point of contact for the profession to assist in navigating VHA and ensuring justice-involved Veterans have timely access to services.


  • August 22, Canandaigua VAMC, Angela Allen, Rural Health Social Worker, and the Mobile Medical Unit, were present at the Monroe County Office of the Aging Salute to Seniors Picnic. The Medical Unit was open for touring and information was given out on how to access its services. The picnic had several hundred seniors in attendance and outreach material was provided for Rural Health, The Veteran Crisis Line, Women’s Health, and Caregiver Support information.


  • August 20, Canandaigua VAMC, Kelly Mohrman, Suicide Prevention Coordinator, did a video interview with the Marine Suicide Prevention Campaign. Sgt. Aaron Hostutler and his team interviewed crisis responders, Psychologists, and the Suicide Prevention Coordinator for three multimedia pieces on: 1) What is suicide/Mentality of someone with suicidal thoughts, 2) Suicide Prevention Avenues, and, 3) Those that are left behind. These multimedia pieces will be “aired” on the Marine website, as well as various social media outlets the Marine Corps uses. Information was provided for Veterans and families on Suicide Prevention and the Veterans Crisis Line. The upcoming Suicide Prevention Month and the “Power of One” campaign were discussed on the video interview.


  • August 18, Canandaigua VAMC, Kelly Mohrman, Suicide Prevention Coordinator, did a radio interview with Cpl Tim Thornton for Military Exchange Radio. The broadcast was aired on Saturday 8/23/14. There is also a link on the Military Exchange website for listening. Information was provided for Veterans and families on Suicide Prevention, Caregivers Support Line, Homeless Veterans Hotline, Women Veterans Hotline, and the Veterans Crisis Line. The upcoming Suicide Prevention Month and the “Power of One” campaign were discussed on the radio interview.


  • August 16 and 17, Canandaigua VAMC, Rural Health Team Members, Veterans Service Center, OEF/OIF/OND and VITAL Team Members presented information to attendees of the Rochester International Air Show. The Mobil Medical Unit was also present for the community to tour and receive additional information on how to access these services. The Air Show had several thousand attendees present over the two day period and outreach material was given to over two hundred Veterans and their family members.


  • August 12, Canandaigua VAMC, Kelly Mohrman, Suicide Prevention Coordinator, recorded a telephone interview with Michelle Faust, a reporter for WXXI Radio. The broadcast has aired multiple times since taping, and there is a transcript on the WXXI News website for viewing. Information was provided for Veterans and families on Suicide Prevention, Caregivers Support Line, Homeless Veterans Hotline, Women Veterans Hotline, and the Veterans Crisis Line.


  • July 26, Canandaigua VAMC VITAL Team Member, David L. Andrews, BSBA, CPS, and OEF/OIF/OND Team Members, Melody Wollgren, LCSW, and Shawn Gianforte, MSW, participated in the Greece American Legion Wounded Warrior Benefit Concert. The purpose of this event was for the VITAL and OEF/OIF/OND Teams to show support to the Veterans in this community and provide education to eligible Veterans on VHA services. There were 1500 attendees at this event and 200 were given information about VHA services offered by the Canandaigua/Rochester VAMC


  • July 22, Canandaigua VAMC Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership Coordinator, Erin Militello, LCSW, trained faculty at New York Chiropractic College on potential needs of Student Veterans. Twenty faculty members were in attendance. The sole purpose of this training was to increase awareness and the success of our student Veterans.
