Network Director

Joan E. McInerney, MD, MBA, MA, FACEP was selected as the Network Director for the New York/New Jersey VA Health Care Network (VISN 2) effective May 1, 2016. VISN 2 includes 10 VA Medical Centers and 59 Community Based Outpatient Clinics in New York and New Jersey that serve over 500,000 Veterans. Dr. McInerney is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. She joined VA in April, 2011 as the Chief Medical Officer of VISN 3 where she led clinical innovation efforts which included integrating new models of care and implementing evidence-based clinical practice. An advocate of Lean processes, Dr. McInerney has championed efforts to reduce inefficiencies while improving safety and quality of care across the VISN. Prior to joining the Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. McInerney was the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at two Level 1 Trauma Centers in metropolitan New York for 24 years and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook and was designated a member of the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. McInerney earned an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University and a MA degree in Security Studies (Homeland Security & Defense) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Ca.

Deputy Network Director

Tom Sharpe was selected to serve as Deputy Network Director effective July 9, 2018. He had been serving as interim Deputy Network Director since July 26, 2017. Tom Sharpe started his career with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Albany/Stratton VA Medical Center in 1989. In 1993 he accepted a position at the Castle Point VA Medical Center as Chief of Accounting. He returned to the Albany/Stratton VA Medical Center in 1998 as Program Analyst working on VA’s Decision Support System program. Mr. Sharpe was selected in 2004 as the Accounting Officer for VISN 2 and in 2007 was promoted to Chief Financial Officer.
