Research & Development (R&D) Committee
The Research and Development Committee (R&D Committee) is responsible to the Medical Center Director for maintaining the highest standards throughout the facility's research and development program as required by:

Such standards include:
  • the scientific quality of research and development projects,
  • the rights of human subjects involved in research,
  • laboratory safety, and
  • the welfare of animals used in research.
The R&D Committee advises the Director on professional and administrative aspects of all funded and unfunded research activities within the facility.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) prospectively reviews research proposals involving human subjects paying particular attention to ethical, moral and human safety issues to ensure full compliance with the facility human research protection program. The IRB is ultimately responsible to protect the rights and welfare of all research subjects.

The IRB reports its findings to the Research and Development (R&D) Committee.

The IACUC (locally referred to as the Subcommittee for Animal Studies) reviews all research proposals involving live vertebrate animals for appropriateness, quality and availability of the animal models selected, humaneness of the proposed procedures, and optimal utilization of animals housed in the Veterinary Medical Unit. It has authority over operation of the Veterinary Medical Unit Facility (VMU) and is in compliance with VHA Handbook 1200.07. This handbook and the animal protocol forms can be found at: www.research.va.gov/programs/animal_research/. The IACUC reports to the Research and Development Committee.
