Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Syracuse VA Medical Center

Meals

Meals are planned by a registered clinical dietitian and your physician. You are expected to eat in the patient dining room for each meal.
Breakfast: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
Lunch: Noon – 1:00 p.m.
Dinner: 4:45 p.m. – 5:50 p.m.

Many of our patients have swallowing problems which may lead to a potentially fatal lung infection called aspiration pneumonia, particularly if patients have cognitive deficits (impairments in thinking and memory) which may cause patients to be easily distracted.

For this reason, we ask that visitors:
  • check with nursing regarding the patient's diet and bringing in food
Patients and visitors are welcome to use the dining room at other times for visiting.

Clothing

You are expected to wear your personal clothing while on the rehab unit. Please have a family member or friend bring in loose, comfortable clothing and shoes such as sweatpants and sneakers. Slippers and dress shoes are not considered to be appropriate footwear for therapy. At times, you may also be expected to go outside as part of your rehab program. Due to this, we also recommend that appropriate clothing for the outdoors be available.

Laundry

You are responsible for laundering your personal clothing. A washer and dryer are available on the rehab unit for this purpose. Nursing will assist you with the washer and dryer as needed.

Toiletries

You need to supply your own toothbrush, toothpaste and grooming supplies.

Closets

Personal locker space may be limited so we encourage you to keep your personal belongings and clothing to a minimum. You can place a personal lock on your locker if you are concerned about your belongings.

Money

It is recommended that you keep any cash and valuables in the patient safe located in the agent cashier's office on the first floor.
