Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Syracuse VA Medical Center

Admission

Upon your arrival, the nursing staff will show you to a room and orient you to the unit. The nursing staff and physicians will evaluate you and start developing your plan of care.

Within 24 hours of your admission, you will be evaluated by occupational therapy, recreation therapy and physical therapy. If needed, a wheelchair will be given to you to use while on the rehab unit.

A social worker will also meet with you within the first few days.

The Speech-language pathologist, rehab psychologist and others specialists will schedule to meet with you when requested by the physician.

All of your appointments for each day will be available at the nurses’ station.

You should receive the patient handbook from the hospital as well as this handbook from the rehab unit. If you have any questions about the information in either of these books, please ask a member of your rehab team.

Various versions of this handbook will be made available to those patients who require the information to be provided in Spanish, Braille, by videotape or audiotape.

Visiting Hours

Your family and friends are welcome to visit you at the Medical Center. The acute rehab unit has open visiting hours.
  • Waiting rooms are strategically placed throughout the Medical Center. Televisions and reading materials have been placed in these areas for your/their enjoyment.
  • Some precautions may be necessary because of risk of infection to both you and your visitors. We ask that you follow posted signs.
  • Visits may need to be limited due to patient condition in some cases. Please ask staff for specific information about these precautions.
  • We encourage visitors to dine with you. Visitors bringing in food, however, should check with your nurse first to ensure dietary restrictions and storage requirements are being observed.
Children are welcomed to visit you, just communicate with your health care team about precautions that may be needed so that we can take steps to ensure a safe visit.

You may speak to the rehab unit social worker for information about over-night accommodations for family members and visitors.

Visitors exiting the Medical Center after hours should use the first floor Veterans Service Center entrance.

Our patients receive occupational and physical therapy together in a large, open room. For reasons of patient privacy, we ask that visitors not attend therapy sessions with you unless requested/scheduled by the therapist.
