Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Syracuse VA Medical Center

Referrals

In order to best meet your needs, the rehab team will consult with other services when appropriate. The rehab doctor may make arrangements for:
  • chaplain/spiritual care
  • driving evaluations
  • nutrition
  • orthotics (braces)
  • prosthetics (artificial limbs)
  • pharmacy
  • respiratory therapy
  • vocational rehab
  • special tests such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs
  • audiology for hearing evaluations
  • specialty doctors
  • visually impaired team
  • dental services
  • community health nurse
  • chemical dependency clinic
  • laboratory services

Typical Day on the Rehab Unit

6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. Bathing/showering, dressing
Breakfast in the dining room
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Therapy appointments
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch in the dining room
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Therapy appointments
4:45 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Dinner in the dining room
5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Visiting; recreation therapy events


Patient and Family/Caregiver Participation

The patient and his family/caregiver are essential to the rehab process and are encouraged to participate with the rehab staff through a variety of ways including:
  • attending patient conferences
  • attending training and education sessions
  • providing emotional support to the patient
Training sessions may be scheduled with the family or caregiver prior to your discharge or leaving the medical center.

Training and education sessions may include:
  • medications
  • skin care
  • bladder and bowel management
  • swallowing precautions and exercises
  • communication strategies
  • exercises to be done at home
  • dressing and bathing
  • walking and stair climbing
  • getting in/out of a chair, bed, tub, shower
  • getting in/out of a car
  • community resources
