Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)

The Albany VA Medical Center maintains an AAALAC accredited animal research program. The AAALAC accreditation program evaluates organizations that use animals in research, teaching or testing. Those that exhibit excellence in animal care and use are awarded accreditation. The accreditation process includes an extensive internal review conducted by the institution applying for accreditation as well as a review by AAALAC evaluators (members of AAALAC’s Council on Accreditation) of those internal reports along with their own comprehensive assessment.

After an institution earns accreditation, it must be re-evaluated every three years in order to maintain its accredited status.

In the scientific community, AAALAC accreditation shows that an institution is serious about setting, achieving and maintaining high standards for animal care and use. When scientific research involves animals, reliable results depend on superior animal care.

All VA animal facilities are required to maintain AAALAC Accreditation.
