Joan McInerney, MD, MA, MBA, FACEP, Selected as the New Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 2) Director
ALBANY, NY — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Joan McInerney, MD, MA, MBA, FACEP as the new Network Director for VISN 2 (NY/NJ VA Healthcare Network). McInerney will oversee delivery of health care at the Bronx, Brooklyn, East Orange, Lyons, Montrose, Manhattan, Northport, Castle Point, Albany Stratton, Bath, Canandaigua, Syracuse, Buffalo and Batavia VA medical centers and 46 community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). VISN 2 serves over 500,000 Veterans in 76 counties in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania offering a wide range of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical services. Services include primary and specialty care, nursing home care, mental health and rehabilitation services, and domiciliary care. VISN 2 medical centers are affiliated with numerous colleges and universities in New York and New Jersey.
“We are excited to bring Dr. McInerney on board as the new Network Director for VISN 2,” said Janet Murphy, Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Operations and Management. “Her sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the VISN, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve. She began her new appointment at the VISN on May 1, 2016.”
McInerney joined the VA in April 2011 as the Chief Medical Officer of New York / New Jersey Healthcare Network (VISN 3). In this role, she led the clinical response in the Network through the VISN Clinical Councils promoting clinical innovation, integrating new models of care and implementing evidence-based clinical practice. An advocate of Lean management processes, she is actively involved in many projects to reduce unnecessary administrative practices which hamper the efficient delivery of health care across VA medical centers and community based outpatient clinics.
McInerney is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Prior to joining the Department of Veterans Affairs, she was the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at two Level 1 Trauma Centers in metropolitan New York for 18 years. Additionally, she is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook.
McInerney has earned a medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, completed a Masters in Business Administration from New York University, NYC and was awarded a Masters of Arts in Security Studies/Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She has been an appointed member of the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
