All research submissions are managed electronically within IRBManager. Each individual involved in research at VAWNYHS is required to have an account within IRBManager. All protocol submissions, approvals, etc. are maintained within the electronic system. Training in IRBManager is available. Please contact Jill Madden to arrange a training session. Research & Development Committee The Research & Development Committee (R&D Committee) is the oversight body for all research activities at VAWNYHS. The R&D Committee reports to the Medical Center Director and is responsible for ensuring that all research undertaken at the facility is in fulfillment of the VA mission. The committee is also responsible for promotion of the research mission at VAWNYHS and ensuring that appropriate oversight measures are in place. Institutional Review Board The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is the human research oversight committee for VAWNYHS. The IRB is responsible for reviewing and monitoring all human subjects research to ensure adequate protection of the rights and welfare of the participants. The IRB is a subcommittee of the Research & Development Committee. The IACUC reviews all research proposals involving live vertebrate animals for appropriateness, quality and availability of the animal models selected, humaneness of the proposed procedures, and optimal utilization of animals housed in the Veterinary Medical Unit. The committee has authority over operation of the Veterinary Medical Unit and maintains full accreditation from the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC International). The IACUC is a subcommittee of the Research & Development Committee. Subcommittee on Research Safety The VAWNYHS Subcommittee on Research Safety (SRS) reviews proposals involving the use of hazardous materials, including but not limited to toxic and/or hazardous chemicals, recombinant DNA, biohazards and radiation. The committee is responsible for assessing the impact of each agent on the safety of personnel working in research laboratories. Proposals involving the use of recombinant DNA may also require review by the University at Buffalo Institutional Biosafety Committee. Staff Chair: Steven J. Research Laboratory Safety Subcommittee The Research Laboratory Safety Subcommittee is the committee responsible for reviewing all laboratory operations to establish that accepted safety standards are being met, and to recommend corrective action if necessary. Membership includes representatives from all major research laboratories. Investigators must certify that their employees are aware of correct safety procedures regarding the operation of equipment, reagent handling, usage, storage and disposal. Staff Chair: Steven J.
