A number of local organizations are volunteering at VA Health Care Upstate New York this summer as part of VA’s Summer of Service initiative, an initiative aimed to bolster volunteer assistance.

The organizations are volunteering their time and talents in various ways by sponsoring events, visiting hospitalized Veterans, and helping beautify VA grounds.

In addition to volunteer work, many organizations have made generous donations to the medical centers to aid Veteran programs and activities.

“We want to thank all the corporations, businesses, schools, Veterans Service Organizations, community organizations and individuals for donating their expertise, time and monetary gifts,” said Darlene DeLancey, Interim Network Director, VA Health Care Upstate New York.

Below are some of this year’s participants:

Albany

Employees from Deloitte & Touche, LLP helped to begin the celebration of Albany VA’s “Summer of Service” by spending a full day completing a makeover of the Fisher House gardens. They donated over 100 bags of mulch, numerous flowers, plants, and a full collection of gardening tools.

Girl Scout Troop 2351, from Niskayuna, spent a memorable day with Veterans this summer. The young ladies served breakfast, provided companionship, and best of all, sang songs and danced. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks # 1500 host this well attended event each month.

Buffalo

Rich Product Incorporated employees took time to recognize Buffalo Veterans with a donation for Veteran activities.

Bath

More than 200 motorcyclists from the Jesters Motorcycle group came to the Bath VA Medical Center on June 6, 2015. The group donated more than $5,000 worth of items for Veterans.

Valley Fuel donated a portion of their earnings to the medical center to aid Veteran activities and programs.

Canandaigua

South Seneca Middle School students took time to visit Veterans on June 10, 2015 at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center. The students presented more than 300 pounds of household items they collected to the Homeless program during their visit.

Syracuse

On May 9, 2015 the Central New York Counties Council Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts and Auxiliaries held a Cinco de Mayo celebration for Community Living Center Veterans. Patients and family members were served tacos, fruit salad, chips and root beer floats.
