Legal Blindness Definition and Visual Impairment Service Team (VIST) Information. 

Legally blind means you have a visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, with eye glasses or with reduced side vision of 20 degrees or less in the better eye.

Ninety percent of people who are legally blind still have remaining useful sight.

Legally blind services include:

Access to a Visual Impairment Services Team (VIST) who will help you maintain independence and adapt to vision loss and coordinate the following services should you need them:
  • Adjustment counseling
  • Referrals to VA blind rehabilitation services and centers
  • Patient education and education for loved ones
  • Visual impairment awareness programs
  • Benefits information and assistance
  • Support groups
  • Connection to community and New York State resources for persons with blindness and visual impairment
  • Lifetime case management
