Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Syracuse VA Medical Center

Welcome

Welcome to the Syracuse VA Medical Center Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation (Rehab) Unit. This booklet contains some general information about the program. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you.

The rehab unit offers specialized care by a team of rehab physicians, nurses, social workers and therapists. Our program is geared to treat problems related to mobility, self-care, communication, swallowing, memory and thinking problems as a result of a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation and/or other orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions.

The primary goal of rehab is to help you regain physical, cognitive, and social functioning. This includes recovering old skills, as well as learning new ways to accomplish everyday tasks. The rehab team will work with you and your family/caregiver to develop an individual treatment program that will maximize your potential and enable you to achieve the greatest independence possible.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is evaluated every three years by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The unit has been fully accredited since 2001.
