Prosthetics: A broad term used to identify the total concept of the field of prosthetics, orthotics, sensory aids, aids for the blind, medical equipment, medical supplies, components and repairs. It also refers to the administration, research, education, training, appliances, services and any other related aspects of the entire program.

Prosthetic Appliances: All aids, appliances, parts or accessories that are required to replace, support or substitute for a deformed, weakened or missing anatomical portion of the body. Artificial limbs, terminal devices, stump socks, braces, hearing aids/batteries, cosmetic facial or body restorations,eyeglasses, mechanical or motorized wheelchairs/scooters, orthopedic shoes, etc.

Programs

Automobile Adaptive Equipment:
A program set for by Congress which allows highly sophisticated equipment to be installed on various modes of transportation to aid in the ingress/egress by the service connected veteran who has severe disabilities. With the proper installation of adaptive equipment, a severely disabled veteran can now safely operate a vehicle allowing him/her an improved quality of life.

Clothing Allowance:
An annual amount of money, specified by Congress, to be paid to each veteran who because of a service-connected disability wears or uses a prosthetic or orthotic appliance (including a wheelchair) which tends to wear out or tear the clothing of such a veteran.

Home Improvement Structural Alterations (HISA):
A program designed to extend the home health services to include home improvements and structural alterations where necessary to ensure the continuation of treatment or provide access to the home or essential lavatory and sanitary facilities.

The Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service provides a wide range of comprehensive products and services including (but not limited to):
  • Eye Glasses - Procurement of prescribed eyeglasses for eligible veterans through contracted sources.

  • Hearing Aids - Procurement of prescribed hearing aids for eligible Veterans.

  • Home Oxygen Therapy - Procurement of equipment and treatment of prescribed home oxygen therapy through contracted sources.

  • Sleep Apnea - Devices to assist in treatment sleep apnea.

  • Prosthetics - Assessment, design, fabrication, fitting, and repairs of custom-made artificial limbs or other assistive devices.

  • Orthotics - Assessment, design, fabrication, fitting, and repairs of orthopedic appliances such as leg braces, spinal orthotics, foot orthotics, specialized shoes, surgical stockings, etc.

  • Durable Medical Equipment - Hospital beds, wheelchairs, scooters, home safety equipment, lifts, etc. DME is medically necessary and appropriate medical care, ordered by a physician for the specific use of the beneficiary, can withstand repeated use, is primarily and customarily to serve a medical purpose.

  • Blind/Low Vision Aids - Items for visually impaired veterans including: magnifying devices, voice enhanced watches, medical devices, etc.

  • Sensory Aids - Items/devices which are designed to compensate for deficiencies in the sense organs, hearing, low vision, speech and communication.

  • Mobility Aids - Items/devices which are designed to compensate/aid in ambulation, i.e. canes, walkers, crutches and specialized devices.

  • Surgical implants - Medical devices, tissue, or fixtures that replace a missing biological structure, support a damaged biological structure, or enhance an existing biological structure.

  • Telehealth equipment — Devices to support home health monitoring.
